The Mainstreet economic index from a March survey of bank CEOs in non-urban, agriculturally dependent portions of a nine-state area rose to a record level from February's solid reading.

"Bank presidents and CEOs in the region reported record business activity for March as the overall economic index increased to 68.1, up from February's 60.0 and January's 61.2. This is the highest reading we have recorded since beginning the survey in 2005, it's up strongly from 51.6 at this time last year. A reading of 50.0 is growth neutral, and March's index indicates robust growth," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss.
